The sacristan is a member of the laity with the responsibilities to prepare the banquet table of our Lord before each celebration of the Eucharist.

Responsibilities include: 

• Filing of the cups and crucible with wine
• Filling the other crucible with water
• Securing the purificators one on each cup
• Placing the large host and smaller hosts on the paten
• Filling the washing pitcher and gathering the washing bowl and drying towel
• Placing the tabernacle key in the tabernacle keyhole
• Lighting the candles before Mass begins
• Placing the Roman Missal on the Credence table
• Placing the Lectionary and the Universal Prayers on the ambo
